She asked an old, wise woman for advice. The wise woman smiled kindly, handed her a magical barley grain, and said, βPlant this in a flower pot and care for it lovingly.β The woman planted the grain, and soon a wonderful flower appeared. Inside this flower sat a tiny girl, only one inch tall. She was named Thumbelina. A shiny, lacquered shell of a walnut served as her cradle. Blue violets provided a soft mattress, and rose petals were her blanket. At night, she would sleep in this cradle and play on the table during the day. On the table, her mother placed a plate of water with a garland of flowers at the rim. The long stems of the flowers dipped into the water, and a large tulip petal floated at the edge. Thumbelina used two white horsehair strands as oars to sail from one end of the plate to the other. All this was delightful.
